The National Society of Black Engineers, or NSBE as it's more commonly known, is one of many nationally recognized organizations offered at the College of Engineering.
Grouped into school chapters, zones and regions across the country, NSBE offers students personal connections at the College of Engineering and professional opportunities at the national level.
NSBE is open to all STEM majors, focusing on their mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community. The group currently has over 75 active members.
With weekly study nights, pre-college initiatives with local public schools, fundraisers, networking opportunities and more, NSBE hosts countless events throughout the semester, both social and professional, to benefit STEM students.
Adam Lawrence, Public Relations Chair of Temple’s chapter shares his advice for students who are considering joining. “Don’t be shy...When I was first going to NSBE I was intimidated, but when I first joined, I felt like it was the right place for me.”
In March, the group will take nearly 40 members to the national conference in Chicago, the product of dedicated fundraising by the group. Members from Temple’s chapter attend every year to participate in workshops, keynote speaker sessions and networking opportunities. Recently, one Temple NSBE member landed a co-op position at Toyota as a result of conference networking.
They are currently planning their annual alumni mixer event for the end of the Spring Semester, bringing together current students and former NSBE members to offer advice and share words of encouragement ahead of finals.
Students are welcome to join at any point during the semester by attending a general body meeting to learn more about the organization. Staying involved with the organization provides the opportunity for leadership positions on the chapter e-board and even the regional or national e-board.
However, Lawrence cites the connections he’s formed through NSBE as the greatest benefit to his involvement. “My favorite part is getting to have a connection with people. I like hanging out with people that have the same goals as me. I feel like NSBE is able to provide that for me.”
Students can learn more about NSBE’s upcoming meetings and events on their Instagram @templeu_nsbe.
